Emergency Room Doctor Recognized

Dr. Novak brings experience and generosity to our community.

Dorothy Novak, MD

Here at Hayward Area Memorial Hospital, we know the value Dr. Novak brings to our community. She’s a talented physician with unmatched experience and a very generous heart. We were pleased to see that recognition in the latest edition of the Sawyer County Record.

John Froemel, a local ambulance administrator, works with physicians in emergency departments all across the state. But Froemel recognizes our own Dorothy Novak, MD as most impressive.

The article goes on to give a brief synopsis of an impressive career…

“Dr. Novak is originally from Butternut, Wisconsin. She attended University of Wisconsin Medical School and completed her residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospital – St. Luke’s Medical Center in 1981. She was first credentialled to provide care in Hayward in 1984. Novak spent 20+ years in the US Army as a Physician, traveling overseas several times. She earned the honor of Colonel while in the Army–a rank not many earn.”

More than a Doctor

Clearly, Dr. Novak is a qualified and highly experienced physician. As a critical-access hospital, HAMH’s role is to provide life-saving care and stabilize patients who live in rural areas, transferring them to facilities to receive a higher level of care when necessary. Sawyer County first responders often perform these transfers, and go on to recognize her extraordinary efforts to care for our community.

“…Sawyer County EMTs would be called to take a transfer out of the [Hayward Area Memorial Hospital] to Duluth. Several times, Dr. Novak would jump on the ambulance and ride along just to help with that higher level of medical profession. She grew to love helping Sawyer County EMTs.”

Another EMT mentions,

“…She is the best teacher. Any questions that an EMT has about their patient, she would answer.”

Our hospital staff recognize Dr. Novak’s generosity as well. On her days off, she has been known to come to work in the Emergency Room when overwhelmed with patients. She spends her days off of work helping staff, even if it’s just to clean rooms. When word of a hospital employee in need reaches her, she helps.

As a special Christmas gift to our partners at Sawyer County Ambulance, Dr. Novak has made a personal donation to its staff.

“Dr. Novak stopped at my office to see me. During our conversation she said that she had something for me. She handed me an envelope. Later, when I opened it I was totally surprised to have in my hand a check for a very generous amount. It was made out to the Sawyer County Ambulance service. This was to be used for our personnel. Dr. Novak, I do not know how to thank you enough. I and all our EMTs thank you.”

Dorothy Novak, MD is a living example of the vision Hayward Area Memorial Hospital holds. Best care. Best partner. Best culture. We’re here caring for you, right here in the place we love.
