Every year, Hayward Area Memorial Hospital & Water’s Edge organize a ‘Kids Day’ for area first graders. On May 11, 2022 our staff traveled to Hayward Primary School with Sawyer County Ambulance. The goals of Kids Day is to familiarize youth with commonly-used equipment and procedures so they are not scared once an ER or doctors appointment is necessary.
Karyn Tiffany, RN in the Infusion Department has been volunteering for Kids Day since its inception close to 20 years ago. First graders asked her questions like, “why do some people stay overnight at the hospital?” And, “Can you taste medicine if you have to breathe it in (via nebulizer)?”
Many students volunteer for jobs. Hands fly up, hoping to get chosen to don a surgical gown or get their blood pressure checked. Other activities involve all students, such as touring an ambulance and participating in physical therapy exercises. This fun and informative day is rewarding for volunteers, and part of our overall mission to improve the health and wellbeing of the people of our greater Hayward Lakes region.
