Updated 4/13/2020: Hayward Area Memorial Hospital & Water’s Edge is closely monitoring the coronavirus outbreak and working with the Sawyer County Health Department, Wisconsin Department of County Health, and following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus that was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan, China. The first case of COVID-19 in the United States was reported on January 21.

Updated Coronavirus screening guidelines from the CDC state that if someone has a fever, cough or shortness of breath, and is not in need of urgent medical care they should first call their doctor or local health department to determine if testing is appropriate. The same approach applies to those that have been in direct contact with someone who is known to have COVID-19 and have a fever or symptoms of respiratory illness.

If you are worried you have been exposed to coronavirus (COVID-19) or are experiencing fever or symptoms of  respiratory illness:

A Sawyer County Community COVID-19 Screening Hotline has been established and is available 7 Days/Week from 9:00 am-4:00 pm. The purpose of this hotline is to help identify people in our community who may be appropriate for coronavirus testing. All individuals who have any of the following respiratory symptoms: cough, fever or shortness of breath should call the hotline at 715-934-4518. A healthcare professional will ask you a series of questions to determine if testing is appropriate.

You may also contact your primary care provider, even after hours. An on-call nurse will triage patients over the phone and provide recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How can I protect myself?

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
Does CDC recommend the use of facemask to prevent COVID-19?

CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public setting where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies) especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.

CDC also advises the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others. Cloth face coverings fashioned from household items or made at home from common materials at low cost can be used as an additional, voluntary public health measure.

Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.

The cloth face covering recommended are not surgical or N-95 respirators. Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserves for healthcare workers and other medical first responders, as recommended by current CDC guidance.

 

 

Can I get tested for the virus at my doctor’s office or at the hospital?

If you suspect you have contracted COVID-19, lease call the A Sawyer County Community COVID-19 Screening Hotline  7 Days/Week from 9:00 am-4:00 pm. at 715-934-4518. A healthcare professional will ask you a series of questions to determine if testing is appropriate.

If testing is appropriate, you will be given an appointment time and location to report for testing.

Can someone who has COVID-19 spread the illness to others?

The virus that causes COVID-19 is spreading from person-to-person. Someone who is actively sick with COVID-19 can spread the illness to others. That is why CDC recommends that these patients be isolated either in the hospital or at home (depending on how sick they are) until they are better and no longer pose a risk of infecting others.

How long someone is actively sick can vary so the decision on when to release someone from isolation is made on a case-by-case basis in consultation with doctors, infection prevention and control experts, and public health officials and involves considering specifics of each situation including disease severity, illness signs and symptoms, and results of laboratory testing for that patient.
